Liz Lovely Lands Whole Foods Deal
Whole Foods Markets Offer Heart-Healthy, Socially Conscious Cookies
May 16, 2003 (Wynnewood, PA) - Need cookies? Drop by your local Whole Foods Market for Cowboy Cookies, Peanut Butter Classics, Bearded Ladies, or Lemon Drops. They’re the four new heart-healthy, socially conscious, absolutely delicious varieties of cookies made by Wynnewood-based cookie company Liz Lovely. Liz and her assistants hand-make, hand-decorate, and hand-package every cookie to insure that every Liz Lovely product gets ample amounts of their secret ingredient – Love.
What makes them heart healthy? They’re dairy-free and egg-free – also called “vegan”. Instead of butter, Liz Lovely uses Earth BalanceTM Spread, a non-hydrogenated, zero-trans-fat butter-substitute made from expeller-pressed oils. According to the makers of Earth Balance, their spread can actually improve your good cholesterol when part of a balanced diet. According to Liz, “My dream was to make dairy-free cookies that taste so chocolaty and incredible that people who avoid dairy could enjoy dessert again. It’s cool when your dreams come true!”
But how do they taste? In the words of Alison Cherry of Whole Foods, “FANTASTIC!!!!! Better than any vegan dessert I've ever had or made!” And in scores of informal taste-tests, Liz Lovely cookies have consistently won accolades from even the pickiest eaters, flying in the face of the bad reputation often associated with vegan foods.
What’s more, spending your dessert dollars on Liz Lovely cookies is good for people and for the planet. Liz Lovely only uses chocolate manufactured by El Rey, a Venezuelan farm coop that pays above Fair-Trade prices for its cacao beans. In addition, the cookies contain lots of Certified Organic ingredients, which is great for farmers and for the planet. Locally, Liz Lovely employs mentally challenged individuals, paid a fair working wage through the Lower Merion Vocational Training Institute, to tie the colorful raffia onto their product tags.
Already being compared to the Ben & Jerry’s of cookies, Liz Lovely LLC, started from home in December of 2002, is the brainchild of Liz and Dan Holtz, married couple and entrepreneurs. Liz drew from several generations of family tradition and her personal experience as a vegan to develop her trademark recipes. Everything from cookie decoration to retail displays –antiqued, hand-painted washtubs – is their artistic labor of love.
Liz will be appearing in person to share samples and discuss the product at regional locations throughout the summer of 2003. Her schedule of appearances and their online shop can be found at http://www.lizlovely.com.
